Aqueduct's gates have been open for an entire month now, and the races have begun. Former champions have returned, as well as the ever popular newcomers. Who will fall, and who will rise?
As far as the newcomers, they've got potential. In the first maiden race of the year, the Maiden Bidder, it was a battle of the sexes as the sabino filly Leftovers faced off with the full brother of champion Azrylith, Illusive Nightmares. Illusive went in as the favorite. The two-year-olds started off cleanly, Illusive taking the early lead. However, come the third turn Leftovers shot ahead to opened a six length margin! this of course was shortened by the determined colt, but the filly won by four lengths. "I was a bit worried." admitted owner and rider, Treivane Delfore, "But she pulled through and did what I asked her to do." Moving on the next race on the agenda, the three-year-old maiden War Ally appeared in the Cleansweep Maiden, but it seems his opponent was no where to be seen. The Militia Maiden, however, was a a square off between Winning is Hereditary and Street Sense. The two ran head to head until the club house turn, and that's when Winning is Hereditary started to run rank and dropped back to place second. "I was afraid he'd rank in the beginning." stated Alex Moreno, the colt's owner. "But it was worth a shot. Even if he didn't win this one race, we'll fix the problem and return. Don't count us out just yet."
We can't forget our returning champions, now can we? Only a few races have been run for them, each entrant a familiar face to the racing world, such as the Spectacular Bid filly, Bid Me Up. However, many are scheduled to return. Disturbed Chaos, who is said to be in the clear after a devastating two-year-old season, will appear in several Kentucky Derby preps. Also, the ever so colorful Shotgun Messiah will run one of his first races here as a five-year-old, and even at his age many are optimistic about this great runner's chances against the youngsters. All in all, Aqueduct is back with a bang. Are you ready?
